2017 - 2018
Vets 2-5 Ashburnham
Oddly perhaps, a draw would probably have been the fairest result.
Belvedere 3-2 Vets
Ultimately, they may have been fitter, but the game was ours to have won.
Farnborough 1-1 Vets
See their report here
Vets 5-2 Riverhead
We took our chances early on, which took the game away from our opponents.
Vets 3-4 Old Tamps
We played as if was a stroll in the park. They worked out the a ball over the top would be our undoing.
Vets 4 - 2 Farningham
On the walk back after the game, they thought they should have been three up at half time, and the scoreline do not do them justice. Hey-ho.

Vets 3 - 1 Hawks Ultras (A) 23.04.16
The Vets end of season tour was a trip to Brighton and a Saturday morning game against the young supporters of Whitehawk who would entertain Maidstone United later in the day. The pitch was the customary tour 3G but turned out to be much to the Vets liking. Facing a brisk wind in the first half the Vets were soon one nil down as the Hawks broke through and scored within the first few minutes, there was a suspicion of offside but linesman Kev Shilling didn't raise his flag and later admitted to his error and confessed that his mind was on the up coming reserves cup final later in the week. The task ahead of the reserves looked ominous as the hosts continued to look dangerous on the attack. However, a triple substitution followed by a Sandsey "round the world" and a Starman turn began the Vets fightback as Deano capitalised on a poor clearance from the keeper and equalised. The Vets saw out the half and went into the break very satisfied with the scores level at one a piece. The second half was dominated by the Vets and a Deano second followed by a trademark break away goal from the new fire safety officer at West Ham's freebie Olympic Stadium - Bromers put the game beyond the Hawks. A fourth should have been added as Deano was fouled in the area but having elected to take the penalty himself could only tamely pass it into the keepers hands as another chance of a hat trick went begging. A good game and a first win on tour possibly inspired by overhearing the opposition at half time suggest "they are not as bad as they look" but probably down to the fact that "we aren't!"
Vets 3 - 0 Wellcome Sports Vets (H) 17.04.16
The final home game of the season saw the Vets entertain Wellcome Sports Vets on a sunny morning at the Elmscroft. The visitors, credit to them, had travelled with much the same team that had overturned a two nil deficit to win 5 - 3 in the reverse fixture back in November. The thought amongst the Vets was that the bigger pitch at the Elmscroft, compared to that at Wellcomes Beckenham ground, would prove to be an influential factor in the outcome of the match. This thought was justified as the Vets moved the ball wide and managed to get in behind the visitors defence fairly comfortably and took the lead around the 20 minute mark as Deano broke through and stroked the ball home. Despite the Vets dominance the visitors posed a threat from their speedy front man as well as from set pieces and it took a brilliant save from Rich to keep the score level, the Vets then needed the crossbar to intervene, as it did a fortnight ago, to maintain the advantage as the whistle blew for half time. The second half was much the same, the Vets grew in confidence and a second goal from Deano was a blow to the visitors from which they never recovered. The hat trick was on following another break and an open goal beckoned but the Farleigh bobble ensured that an air-shot was all that happened. TC had a chance from a Davor cross but could only tap the ball into the keepers hand, he did however, create the third goal as his powerful shot was saved and rebounded to Neill who headed the ball home. Another 3 - 0 will and four wins out of the last five games. Whoever mentioned that this might be down to the re-appearance of the Star-Man may have a point or it could just be coincidence - any alternative theories, answers on a postcard, please!! Another season has come to an end but tour is only five sleeps away.
Vets 3 - 0 Riverside Vets (A) 03.04.16
After a series of decent performances and a couple of wins fresh in the minds, the Vets were feeling confident of reversing the loss a few weeks back, against todays opposition, Riverside Vets. There was a slight delay of kick off as the British Touring Car Championships at the nearby Brands Hatch caused some unusual Sunday morning traffic congestion, to make matters worse Deano had the kit and it was suggested that the team assembled on the pitch in their pants awaiting its arrival, the panic was soon over and the Vets made their way to the field fully kitted. The home side won the toss and elected to kick down hill in the first half. After a few miss-cued attempted clearances, courtesy of the uneven playing surface, the Vets were soon taking the game to the opposition and had the better of the chances before the break. The disciplined Vets defence were in control and the game-plan of clearing the ball into the channels behind the Riverside full backs was working perfectly but it took a superb full length diving save from Becky, in goal, right on the stroke of half time, to keep the scores level at the break. There was a sense of 'job done' at the beginning of the second half and it was the visitors attacking up the slope who were in the ascendency and should have taken the lead as an attempted clearance put the Riverside striker in on goal but the pitch came to the rescue and he blasted the ball over the bar from six yards out. The Vets picked up their game and were soon creating some good chances but it took a touch of genius as the ball settled at the feet of Malcy on the edge of the box, using all his years of experience, he spotted the keeper off his line and caressed the ball into the net with the deftest of chips. The Vets were looking to add to their lead but despite their dominance it was Riverside who should have scored next as a thunderous strike from 30 yards rattled the bar and was cleared to safety. Shortly after this scare the Vets did add to their lead as a sumptuous free kick from Davor was nonchalantly turned in by Gaz with the outside of his left boot. This was a day of exquisite goals and another fantastic move finished with a sublime lay-off from Payney allowed Deano to cap off a brilliant individual performance with a much deserved goal. A great performance and clean sheet to boot as the Vets closed the game out for a satisfying three nil away win
Vets 2 - 4 Belvedere Vets (A) 13.03.16
It was a bright morning but there was a chill in the air as the Vets gathered at Belvedere sports club for a first encounter with their Vets team, fortunately the chill subsided as Graham entered the changing room with water bottles full of fresh, clean, Kent spring water, much to the relief of the Gaffer. As the teams made their way to the field it was evident that the Belvedere Vets were not quite as experienced as the visitors and the result of the toss and hopefully the decision to attack down the hill in the second half would be crucial to the outcome of the match. The Gaffer selected himself to play a half, whichever one was downhill. A successful call at the toss and the Vets began the game kicking up the slope. The home side were comfortable on the ball but a disciplined defence kept them at bay, a few half chances were created but nothing clear cut. Slightly against the run of play Deano broke through and scored from a tight angle mid way through the half. Belvedere continued to attack and equalised a few minutes before half time as the ball fell kindly after a deflected cross and was turned in by their No 9. A disappointing end to the half in view of the performance but on the balance of play a fair reflection of the game so far. The advantage of kicking down the slope in the second half did not quite materialise as the fitter home side took control and scored two goals in quick succession from outside the box as the Vets were unable to close the opposition down. Despite going behind the Vets rallied, in particular Deano, who scored his second of the match as he challenged the keeper and tucked away the loose ball. 'Come on' was the cry and the Vets almost equalised from a sublime move involving Becky, Deano and the classy Starry, making his season debut. Even the opposition skipper commented "what a goal that would have been" just moments before he himself broke the offside trap and scored Belvedere's fourth. Despite the apparent age advantage and the quality of Belvedere's play this was one of the best performances of the season by the Vets, despite the loss. An enjoyable game and played in good spirit.
Vets 4 - 1 Hythe Vets (H) 06.03.16
Mothering Sunday at the Elmscroft and by all accounts the mother of all rows between the gaffer, Johnny Glad and skipper Stevo. Ferguson Vs Keane take 2 and all will be revealed in their respective autobiography's available in all good book stores, shortly. The game saw a second win in a row for the Vets and a double of 4-1 wins against Hythe Vets. Maybe it has been passion that has been lacking for much of the season. TC with a brace and another goal from Deano and to complete the set of doubles Neil Coppins second game in a row topped off with a goal. Final score 4-1.
Vets 2 - 0 Reigate Priory Vets (H) 28.02.16
After another couple of weeks off and yet again, another windy morning at the Elmscroft the Vets welcomed for the first time, Reigate Priory Vets, who made the long trip from Surrey. The mood in the dressing room before the game seemed buoyant as the Vets sought their first win since late October. The pitch was very uneven and both sides struggled to get the ball under control and passing was very difficult, having said that both sides tried to play football and the game ebbed and flowed. On a sour note Scud twisted his knee as he tried to turn and was carried of the park midway through the first half. Becky took his place and was involved in the build up to the opening goal as he scooped the ball to Stevo who put Deano through on goal and he coolly slid the ball under the keeper, one nil at half time. In the second half, although the Vets had the slight advantage of the slope, the cold northerly wind was in their face. The Vets were playing much better than they had done in recent weeks but still needed to defend resolutely to maintain their advantage and hold on to the lead. On 75 minutes the Vets struck again to double their lead, Neil chipped the ball over the defensive line of Reigate and Becky cut the ball back to Deano, who expertly side footed the ball into the back of the net. From then on the Vets assumed control and Reigate never really threatened again. A win at last and a much needed one at that. A good game and a good opposition and the Vets will look forward to the return at Reigate whose pitch is apparently "like Wembley"
Vets 1 - 4 Riverside Vets (H) 07.02.16
After a couple of weeks off the Vets were back in action at the Elmscroft with Riverside Vets, the visitors. There was a strong wind blowing down the slope and the Vets decided to play with it in the first half. Despite the advantage it was the visitors who scored first, slightly against the run of play but they managed to steal the ball from a throw in and break down the Vets right to create a simple chance calmly put away. The lead did not last long as the Vets rallied and Clarkey hooked the ball over his head for it to drop down just under the bar with the keeper under pressure. Neither team managed to create anything for the rest of the half and it remained 1-1 at the break. As the wind picked up in the second half the Vets found themselves increasingly under pressure and found it difficult to get out of their half. There were a few surges forward but no clear cut chances arose. The game was gone mid way through the second half in a passage of play Clarkey would rather forget, having put in a proper shift a speculative cross struck his arms in the box and a penalty was awarded and duly converted, moments later Riverside carved their way through the defence only to be scythed down by the unfortunate midfielder, to be fair, he was the only one chasing back. Another penalty and the same result. 3-1 which soon became four as the visitors intercepted Micks clearance, ran in on goal and slotted the ball past the helpless Paul.
Vets 0 - 1 Ashburnham Vets (A) 17.01.16
The Vets travelled for the second game in a row to Greenwich Barracks to face a new team - Ashburnham Wanderers, Despite overnight snow the game was on due to the sterling efforts of the groundsman, who, by all accounts, was clearing the pitch at 7.30am, roughly the same time Malcy and Ziggy were rolling in from the pubs and clubs of downtown Maidstone celebrating the latters 50th! The game kicked off and The Vets started well, the opposition were evenly matched and a few half chances were created at both ends, Ashburnham hit the top of the bar and Bromers volleyed just wide after an excellent move down the left wing. Half Time and no score despite good play from both teams, The Vets felt they had dominated possession and the second half was no different but mid way through the second half Asburnham scored following a bit of over elaborate play by the Vets in their midfield. The Vets continued to push forward and threaten the home sides goal but the chances would not fall kindly, Mick was unable to turn the ball in from a corner and Graham clipped the bar with a shot from the edge of the box. The final whistle blew and the game finish one nil to the home side, a really good game played in good spirit, refereed well and definitely a team we would welcome at The Elmscroft.
Vets 2 - 3 Inter Viagra (A) 03.01.16
On a wet and windy day, the Vets made the trip to South London to face Inter Viagra hoping to get the year off to a winning start and avenge the 6-0 drubbing at home earlier in the season. After a change of pitch and literally moving the goal posts the game kicked off a few minutes late. The Vets made a positive start and created an early chance when Bromers was put through after a flowing move but was unable to find the target. Shortly afterwards Viagra took the lead, slightly against the run of play, as the ball was hooked over Paul from the edge of the box. The lead lasted less than a minute as straight from the re-start Deano broke through the defence and slotted the ball past the keeper to level the scores, honours even at half time. As the weather deteriorated in the second half neither team was able to take control and it took an unbelievable volley from outside the box which rifled past Paul and into the net to tip the balance, unfortunately for the Vets this superbly struck shot was from the right foot of Robbo as he tried to clear the ball, it is still unclear as to why he was trying to clear the ball towards his own goal! The Vets rallied once again and once again, equalised almost immediately as Bromers rounded the defence and neatly finished to bring the scores level. The game looked destined for a draw but there was a sting in the tail as another thunderous volley from outside the box, this time from the Viagra left winger, found the net. After a few changes, the Vets pushed forward searching for the equaliser but is was not to be as one final chance was toe poked the wrong side of the post after the Viagra keeper spilled the ball. A reasonable performance to begin the New Year but a narrow loss when a draw was probably deserved and another good game with Viagra.
Vets 0 - 2 STC Vets (H) 29.11.15
With the gaffer laid up at home with a bad back, most likely caused by carrying all that cash to the bank after last week, the Vets organised themselves to face STC vets. A strong wind prevailed at the Elmscroft Stadium and the visitors won the toss and elected to play into the wind first. Taking a lead in the first half was critical but try as they did the Vets struggled to break down the STC defence. The only real chance came following a surging run from the back from Billsy who set up Sandsy for a sweetly struck shot that hit the underside of the bar and bounced up invitingly for the afore-mentioned, the gaping net beckoned but the weakest of headers was comfortably gathered by the keeper. Despite the dominance of the home side the visitors had a couple of good chances to take the lead but the 4-5-1 formation worked well, in particular Scud and Robbo with freedom to express themselves in the centre of midfield were full of running, either side of the ever tireless Clarkey. Deano was everywhere, as usual but visitors held out until half time. The wind picked up in the second half and the Vets struggled to get out of their own half and went one-nil down as a fierce cross from the right was headed in at the near post, nothing Paul could do about that. The Vets pushed forward but found it difficult to threaten the opposition goal as a game of "kick the Deano" ensued, cynically fouled each time he led a counter attack. The game was put to bed as STC scored from a long throw which the Vets failed to clear. A third defeat in a row but as with the previous two games the result could have been in the Vets favour had they taken their chances.
Vets 0 - 3 Old Tamps (H) 22.11.15
It was a cold morning at the Elmscroft as the Vets took on Old Tamps hoping to continue the trend of following a loss with a win. However, the Vets struggled to get into this game and this could possibly be attributed to the pre match fleecing from Johnny Wonga.com, anything from subscriptions to match tax to raffle tickets, the Wolf of West Farleigh showed no mercy as anyone who came through the changing room door was immediately relieved of the contents of their wallets.
The Vets kicked off and tried to play their usual game of possession football but found retaining the ball difficult on a very slow surface. Old Tamps looked the most threatening and opened the scoring midway through the first half as a headed clearance fell nicely on the edge of the box and a sweet left footed strike hit the back of the net. The Vets created chances but could not find the finish, Bromers rounded the back line of Old Tamps and put the ball wide and Sandsy had a couple of opportunities from the edge of the box but could not connect with any power. one nil to the visitors at half time and the instructions in the dressing room were to play higher up the pitch in the oppositions half. The Vets pressed more in the second half and continued to create chances but it was Old Tamps who nearly increased their lead as they found the net from a header, only for it to be ruled out for offside. Although it wasn't long before the visitors lead was increased as another headed clearance fell kindly on the edge of the box and an even sweeter strike found the net. Two shots on target and two goals!
Even though the Vets were not playing at their best they continued to create chances, a lack of venom in the shots at goal being the main problem. As the Vets pushed on in search of a goal, gaps were appearing at the back and this was punished with 15 minutes to go as Old Tamps scored again to go three up. The Vets should have had an opportunity to get one back as a perfect cross from Stevo was about to be nodded in by Billsy when the Old Tamps left back clattered into him, the stoniest of stone wall penalties waved away by ref, Micky, who must have been unsighted. Having said that, the way things were going in front of goal for the Vets it's unlikely that it would have been put away anyway.

Vets 3 - 5 Wellcome Sports Vets (A) 15.11.15
The Vets travelled to Beckenham to face Wellcome Sports Vets for the first time, with a mish-mash of kit containing no less than three No7 shirts the Vets kicked off with the wind at their backs and quickly took a two-nil lead as first Bromers crossed for TC to volley in from close range following some good play down the right and then lobbed the keeper from a tight angle. The response from Wellcome was positive as the Vets sat back inviting pressure, they were soon rewarded as a Robbo rose early to clear a cross from the right only to be adjudged to have fouled the attacker, who made a bit of a meal of it but on reflection a correct decision. The penalty was duly converted low and to the right giving Paul no chance. Although the Vets took a 2-1 lead into half time the momentum had shifted in favour of Wellcome, who continued to push forward and soon equalised and then took the lead after some sloppy defending from the Vets. As the Vets pushed forward in an attempt to get back in the game they were hit on the break to go 4-1 down and soon after Wellcome made it five direct from a corner as Scud did well to duck under the ball at the near post, he must have miss-read the recent article from America which reported that heading has been banned for under 9's, thinking it said under 49's. The Vets did get some consolation as Bromers latched on to a long ball and blasted it past the keeper from close range. Despite the lucky No 7's the Vets did not get much luck in this game as the game finished 5 - 3 to the home side. A new opposition and a good addition to the fixture list.
Vets 4 - 1 Hythe Vets (A) 25.10.15
It was a glorious day on the south coast and the pitch was in perfect condition for the Vets first away game of the season, Hythe Vets were the hosts and a full strength Vets side were in a buoyant mood, despite the shock home defeat in the previous fixture. The gaffer was otherwise engaged so the pre match pacing up and down, worrying whether everyone was going to turn up, was perfectly executed by Bromers. In the early stages the Vets were comfortable in possession and passing the ball around well, neither side really threatened the goal until a succession of attacks from the Vets resulted in a couple of near misses, first, Deano hit the post and then Clarkey, somehow hit the bar and the post. An opening goal for the away side looked imminent but a slip at the back allowed the nippy Hythe striker in on goal, fortunately Billsy managed to get a toe on the ball which Paul safely gathered. The Vets continued to apply pressure and were rewarded with an opening goal as some great play down the right saw the ball cut back to Deano who's first time shot found the net. The home side pressed forward in search of a equaliser before half time but the Vets doubled their lead with a sweetly struck left foot volley from Dave Clarke, following a pin point Stevo cross, a goal of the season contender already. Minutes to go before half time and the Vets were awarded a penalty as Deano was pushed over in the box, he duly stepped up and converted the spot kick and the vets took a three nil lead to the break. The only down side of the first half was a neck injury to Gary who fell awkwardly following a valiant defensive tackle. The Vets kicked off the second half and although in control of the game, struggled to reach to intensity of the first half, an air of complacency had taken over which resulted in a miss-placed pass, to be fair the only one of the match, which was punished as Hythe's lone striker found the net from the edge of the area. The game should have been put to bed by the Vets sooner than it was as a succession of chances were created, only to either hit the woodwork or to be snuffed out by the home side's substitute goalie. Hythe were still a threat but the Vets defence was solid, Mick having moved into the centre and Andy dropping in at right back alongside Sandsy and Billsy were impregnable. Finally the fourth goal came, as Deano completed his hat-trick, rounding the keeper and slotting home. Clearly the best performance of the season so far and a deserved win. A good spirited game, well refereed.
Vets 0 - 6 Inter Viagra (H) 04.10.15
There was an air of confidence amongst the Vets prior to this game, on the back of a good performance the week before and welcoming back a number of regulars from various golf trips abroad, expectation was high, especially considering a double of victories last season over todays visitors, Inter Viagra. The visitors were down to ten men just before kick-off as one of their players was called in to work, the Vets offered the services of one of one of Farleigh's young reserves, seeking match fitness, to make up their numbers, a gesture they would come to rue later in the match. The Vets opted for a 3-5-2 formation and began the game with some good possession in the centre of the park, a couple of early exchanges came to nothing for either side but a misplaced pass from the home side saw a quick break and a neat finish from Inter to go one up. Still feeling they were the better side the Vets created a number of half chances that just did not fall kindly and were punished when they hit the woodwork (for the third time) towards the end of the half, only to see the ball end up in the back of their own net 20 seconds later, scored by the 'on loan' Blake. Two nil down at half time but the feeling was that the Vets could turn this around in the second half. However, the second half was all Viagra, they played superbly and fully deserved the four goals they scored, including a stunning left foot strike and another from Blake. The final score 0 - 6 and the only positive contribution from the home team was attempting to find Viagra's stalwart central defender Ben find his false tooth that had been knocked out in a tangle with, you guessed it, Deano! Despite the convincing defeat the game was, as expected against Inter Viagra, played in the true spirit of vets football.
Vets 3 - 1 Farnborough Old Boys (H) 27.09.15
As the Vets gathered in the dressing room is was touch and go as to whether they would field a full eleven and the pre-match talk was of borrowing some players from the visitors. However, by kick-off the Vets had a full side and the luxury of a sub. The Vets were in control of the early stages of the contest but a sweet strike form outside the box from the visitors gathered pace off the slick surface and beat the diving Paul to put Farnborough one up, somewhat against the run of play. The game remained fairly even until just before half time Neill's tenacity paid off as he robbed the ball from the Farnborough midfield and after a one-two with Deano broke free and slotted the ball past the advancing 'keeper. A goal apiece at break and both teams fairly content. The Vets kicked off the second half and immediately put pressure on the visitors defence and were soon in the lead as Deano, playing with a broken hand, outpaced the defence and finished coolly. The Vets were now on top but needed a point blank save from Paul to remain so. Another break-away goal from Deano sealed the win, which could have been extended as Billsy broke into the opposition box, his shot saved by the 'keeper. An excellent performance all round but in particular Mick and Adam in the centre of defence were outstanding. A deserved 3 - 1 win and a spirited response after the disappointment of the previous week.
Vets 2 - 9 Slayer (H) 20.09.15
Having had to withdraw from the first scheduled game of the season the Vets took to the field of the Elmscroft Stadium against Slayer, a reincarnation of old foe Canterbury City. As the game began it became apparent that the opposition attacking players were quite a bit more youthful than our back four, to begin with the Vets held their own and a speculative shot from well outside the area skidded off the wet turf in front of Paul and he could only parry it into the path of the visitors who smashed the ball into the roof of the net, broke the deadlock. A second goal followed as Billsy cushioned the ball back to the stricken 'keeper only to see it gather pace of the surface and roll agonisingly over the line. The Vets did create some chances but nothing clear cut, although Farleigh debutant Terry Cordice appeared to be tripped in the box but no penalty was awarded. The visitors extended their lead when an in-swinging corner was only half headed away and bounced off one of their players and into the net. The half time score was 0-3 but the feeling in the dressing room was that the visitors had been slightly fortunate, although they had played well and enjoyed the majority of possession. The Vets started the second half with a positive approach but were caught on the counter attack and the visitors extended their lead to 0-4. Soon after that Deano got in behind the Slayer defence and scored from an almost impossible angle, the comeback was on but the tiring legs of the home team were beginning to tell, the visitors scored a further five break away goals with a thunderbolt shot into the top corner from TC the only repost. 2-9 the final score. Despite the dominance of the visitors and the perceived age gap in some areas, the game was played in a good spirit.
Middle Aged Vets 4 - 2 Res's and Old Vets (H) 06.09.15
The new season kicked of, eventually, with the annual memorial match between the Reserves and the Vets. Unfortunately the reserves were only able to muster four players, whilst the Vets, keen and raring to go, were twelve strong. A combined four oldest/four youngest versus the eight "middle aged" was the format. Prior to the game the Chairman Baino presented a somewhat surprised Billsy with the Vets Player of the Year trophy for the 2015-15 (that what it says on the tankard) season. It is apparent that writing nice things about your teammates on the website each week can go a long way to gaining their adulation!! The game itself began eight a side and finished ten aside as players emerged from their beds. A 4-2 "victory" for the middle ages was the final score, including a hat-trick from Deano which, fortunately for Bromers, does not count in pursuance of the golden boot. £100 plus raised for charity so all in all not a bad start.
2014 - 2015
Season Review
This last season 2014/15 being the seventh since the Vets were formed was probably our best so far. After a 1-4 defeat to the Reserves, it began in earnest away to Erith, a close fought 1-0 win began a series of five consecutive wins, unfortunately after a month long lay off the winning streak was ended abruptly by a 0-6 home loss to STC, followed by a 2-5 loss at HMP Stamford Hill and a pre Christmas thrashing away to Old (not quite as old as us) Roan, going down 2-10. The New year started well beating Inter Viagra 6-4 but after that results fluctuated, the only draw being a second half fight back from 0-2 down to end up 2-2 against Hythe. Excluding the pre season loss to the Reserves and the 1-4 loss on tour, the season finished with a creditable P 17 W 8 D 1 L 8 - The undoubted highlight of the season being the spectacular overhead kick from our very own gaffer Johnny Glad.
Vets 0 - 3 Riverside Vets (A) 10.05.15
The final game of the season took place at Eynsford against Riverside Vets, the home team looking to take revenge for a run of recent losses against The Vets. The beginning of the game was fairly even with no real chances falling to either team and despite The Vets having the advantage of the slope in the first half it was the home side that opened the scoring mid way through the half when they broke through and were one on one with the keeper, after an initial block the ball worked free and was tapped into the empty net by the supporting midfielder, against the run of play it has to be said. The lead was increased shortly afterwards when Gary was unlucky to be penalised for holding his opponent when it looked as though the initial foul was against him and a slightly controversial penalty was awarded. Billsy, standing in, in goal went the right way and got a hand to the ball but it still managed to bobble up into the goal. The Vets lost their composure for a while but managed to hold on to half time without further damage. The Vets came out for the second half in full attack mode but were caught on the break as the Riverside winger got to the by-line and the cross was met on the volley and steered neatly into the top corner. From then on The Vets had the majority of the possession Stevo and Clarkey maintaining the total football philosophy which had been the reason for our most successful season to date but it was not enough and even though the home side mounted a few counter attacks the game finished 0-3. The result was slightly flattering to the home side, it was a simple case of Riverside capitalising on their breaks. A good game, once again played in the right spirit.
Vets 1 - 4 Brackley Utd Vets (A) 03.05.15
A midday kick-off in Bradford on a slick artificial surface was to be the ultimate challenge for the Vets on the 2015 tour to Leeds. Fortunately the preparation of the squad had been planned to perfection. Curry, Burgers and plenty of liquid! The Vets arrived at the ground in plenty of time despite Malcy being in the shower at the scheduled departure time and Dave G having a polite conversation with a dry-stone wall on the way. The Vets took to the field early to complete their warm-ups but as the hosts made their way to the pitch Northern Mick pointed out a couple of ex-pros (and not the type Malcy was dancing with the night before) in their line up, who happened to be former players of Leeds Utd and Bradford City no less. The game kicked off and it was clear from the opening exchanges that the Vets were in for a real examination of their character and ability, although the Vets persevered with their philosophy of playing out from the back and retaining possession, this was to have a hand in the first goal as the Vets were caught on the edge of the box and the ball was neatly tucked away by the home team's striker. The rest of the first half was evenly contested but just before half time an unfortunate malfunction of Paul's goalkeeping gloves allowed the ball to pass between them and his legs only to be desperately palmed away into the path of a Brackley midfielder to hammer home. The second half was more even, with hangovers gradually wearing off, the Vets looked like pulling one back but it was a speculative shot from outside the box that increased the lead for the home team. The Vets continued to push forward looking for an equaliser but it was another long range strike that put the home team four-nil up. The team talk before the match was "just get through it" at half time it was "we can get a draw out of this" and "win the second half" then with ten minutes to go the word from the dugout was "win the last 10 minutes." Next goal wins and all that! Served up by a dodgy back pass, Bromers latched onto the mistake, rounded the keeper and side footed the ball into the net, an away goal in the bag, how significant might that turn out to be in the return match at the Elmscroft!! Final score 4-1 to Brackley Utd. This was a great game played in the best spirit, what a great bunch of blokes our hosts were and not bad players either.
Vets 3 - 2 Old Tamps (H) 26.04.15
After another few weeks without games, there was an air of anticipation amongst the final home crowd of the season at The Elmscroft Stadium as The Vets welcomed Old Tamps (the senior version of Old Roan who had demolished The Vets 10-2 just before Christmas) The pre game routine was put out slightly as Deano arrived in the changing room whilst the rest of the team were actually still in there!! The shock of that aside, The Vets took to the field full of confidence after an inspiring team talk from the Gaffer. The Vets dominated the early stages of the game, as is usually the case but it was Old Tamps who had the best of the early chances. The deadlock was finally broken when a Stevo corner from the right was hooked "over his head" by Clarkey, only for it to graze the underside of the bar and drop down behind the line untouched by Gaz or anyone else. A second overhead kick in one season, difficult to comprehend but having had the bar raised so high earlier in the season the definition should surely be re-defined. As the game continued the Vets took control of the game and a second goal came as Starry sprinted free down the left and closed in on goal, a heavy touch took him wide but a rasping left foot shot beat the keeper at the near post to put the Vets two up. A third goal quickly followed as a poor clearance from the Old Tamps keeper fell to Starry in acres of space 35 yards from goal, this time a curling right foot shot hit the back of the unguarded net and a Cantona-esq celebration ensued. The half time whistle blew and The Vets took a deserved three nil lead into the break.
An early goal for the Vets in the second half would have put the game to bed but the passing was wayward and The Vets found it difficult to keep possession. Just before the break Old Tamps had made a telling substitution and it was the substitute that turned the tide in the second half as he benefited from some miscommunication between The Gaffer and Billsy to get to the by-line and cross the ball for an easy tap-in, soon after, as Old Tamps committed players forward they were rewarded with a second as the Vets defence was over-run and the ball was slotted under the advancing Paul. Old Tamps looked the most likely to score next and came close to equalising as a corner fell kindly on the edge of the box to one of the visitors, only to see the subsequent volley superbly tipped on to the bar by Paul, wearing a lovely royal blue number. That was to be the last chance of the match as legendary ref and Bernard Bresslaw's biggest fan, Micky, blew his final, final whistle of the season. A deserved 3-2 victory in another good game played in the right spirit.

Vets 2 - 3 Ditton Vets (H) 29.03.15
By all accounts this was a close match with Ditton Vets taking full advantage of a weakened Vets side to avenge their early season humiliation at the Community Centre Ground. Deano scored and Clarkey also scored from the spot following the re-take of Masha's saved attempt.
Vets 2 - 2 Hythe Vets (H) 08.03.15
On a glorious sunny spring morning the Vets welcomed Hythe Vets to the Elmscroft Stadium. As with the first encounter at Hythe, the opposition fielded several players of questionable vets status, perhaps the early kick-off was in view of the fact that the next day was a school day. The early stages of the game were dominated by the spritely Hythe attack and they capitalised on a scuffed clearance from reserve team 'keeper Becky to go one up. A few minutes later the visitors went two up with a curling shot from outside the penalty area and things were not looking too promising for the home side. Having started the game, the gaffer, Johnny "leaping legend" Gladwin changed the formation to 4 - 5 - 1 bringing on Dave Clarke, returning from injury and Masha, making his first appearance of the season (tour must be coming up soon!) Our re-vamped midfield soon took control of the game with Malcy and Stevo at their creative best. The vets were now looking dangerous but the visitors held out for the remainder of the first half to go into the break two nil to the good. The second half started as the first had finished, the vets five man midfield causing the visitors problems and after a move down the left Bromers cut inside, only to be tripped in the box, PENALTY. Up stepped Clarkey but his effort hit the post and he blasted the rebound over the bar but it wouldn't have counted anyway. The vets continued to push forward but it was looking more and more as though their chance to get back into the game had evaded them. Another substitution saw Starry replace Stevo and within seconds the vets were awarded another penalty as, once again, Bromers was tripped in the box. This time Masha took the responsibility and struck the ball home to pull one back. The vets were playing well and moving the ball around nicely, there was even a bit of showboating as Starry managed a Cruyff turn, which resembled an oil tanker, to begin a move that would finish with Masha claiming his second and the equalizer with a difficult volley from a ball dropping over his head. The vets defence was holding firm, well marshalled by Gary but it took a point blank block by Mick, who took one in the head, to make sure the visitors didn't regain the lead, this was quickly followed up by another blow to his southern region! Both sides looked to be settling for the draw and John brought himself back on for the dazed and confused Mick "its surprisingly sunny in Yorkshire for this time of year" he said as he departed. There was to be no glory goal this week as the game finished in a hard fought two all draw. Another enjoyable game played in good spirit.
Vets 1 - 2 Farnborough Vets (A) 22.02.15
After the events of last week and the global trending of #JohnnyGlad#OverheadKick#KCFAStandingOvation, TheVets travelled to a new venue at Beckenham Cricket Club to face Farnborough Vets. Not the easiest ground to find, which proved to much for Deano as he failed to show. The Gaffer had a decision to make, play himself up front from the start or revel in the glory of the previous week for a bit longer. Decision made and the Gaffer took up his customary position on the bench. The pitch was very small and space was hard to find but with the confidence of the previous week The Vets immediately settled into a controlled passing game, although any fluency from either team proved hard to come by. The Vets had an early scare as Farnborough broke into the box, rounded Billsy in goal and hit the post with a shot from a tight angle, the rebound fell invitingly for the Home side but the follow up also hit the post and was scrambled away. The deadlock was broken when a long clearance from our keeper was mis-controlled by his opposite number and Bromers was on hand to slide the ball into the empty net. The Vets were well in control at this point and should have increased their lead as Dave Gilliver got in behind the defence, following an excellent ball from Starry but was unable to keep his powerful shot under the bar. We looked like going into the break to the good but a late break away by the home side saw them equalise from a tight angle. The second half saw the Vets assume control of the game, pushing forward looking for the break-through, Stevo was running the show in midfield and was unlucky not to score when his shot hit the bar, another chance went begging when Bromers rounded the goalkeeper but could only find the side netting. A succession of corners were well defended by the home team who were on the back foot for most of the half. The Vets defence held firm when called upon, Gary and Si, along with Scud and Mick dealing with any counter-attack from the home side. The game looked like ending in a hard fought draw but in the dying minutes, Farnborough were awarded a free kick just inside their own half. The Vets defence held their line on the 18 yard box but the accuracy of the delivery evaded them and was met by a superb diving header which went like a tracer bullet into the net. The Vets stood around scratching their heads momentarily but in truth there was nothing anyone could have done to prevent the home side's winner. A disappointing result but a pleasing performance nonetheless and a decent game played in good spirit.
Vets 4 - 2 Riverside Vets (H) 15.02.15
The Vets welcomed Riverside Vets to the Elmscroft Stadium this week and were in a confident mood having had the better of them in their recent encounters. The optimism was soon rewarded as Malcy put the Vets into a deserved lead with a controlled shot into the bottom corner of the net. This was the first time the Vets had scored first for a number matches but the lead was short lived as Riverside were awarded a rather soft penalty which was duly converted to level the scores. Neither side was able to seize the initiative and the half came to an end with the score one all. After an inspiring half time team-talk we conceded early in the second half as stand in keeper, Billsy, was lobbed from 30 yards. From that point on there was only one team in it as The Vets pressed and pressed searching for an equaliser, which came, predictably, from top scorer Bromers as he cut in from the right and curled the ball, left footed, into the top corner, giving the Riverside keeper no chance. The early season form seemed to be re-emerging as crisp one touch passing created several more chances, the lead eventually regained as Malcy played an exquisite through ball for Bromers who finished sublimely. It was one way traffic but a one goal lead is always precarious and Riverside should have equalised as they broke into the box and rounded Billsy only to blast the ball over the bar. The Vets definitely needed the cushion of a fourth goal and with five minutes plus stoppage time remaining it finally came, but this was not just a goal to round off an excellent team performance and a much needed win, it was a goal that would grace any of your Maracana's, Camp Nou's or Old Trafford's. The ball was played in from a corner and half cleared by the defence, the chance was kept alive as the ball was hooked back into the six yard box. As ball looped through the sky HE sprung into the air with all the elegance of a swan lake ballerina and with a perfectly executed overhead kick, yes, an overhead kick, struck the ball sweetly into the top corner. HE was, of course, our very own Gaffer, John Gladwin. Who, when asked afterwards what he was thinking at the time, said modestly "This could go horribly wrong" thankfully it didn't and the crowd were lucky enough to witness one of the most memorable goals in the 104 year history of the club. Four - two and we will all remember the day when "Johnny Glad scored an overhead kick"
Vets 1 - 4 Erith Vets (H) 08.02.15
After a couple of weekends of cancelled matches the Vets were back in action at the Elmscroft Stadium. In the early stages the match was fairly even but a speculative cross from the visitors rebounded off the crossbar and fell at the feet of an Erith attacker who calmly stroked the ball home .The Vets then put together a few nice moves and were unlucky not to equalise direct from a corner as the in-swinging ball clipped the underside of the bar and somehow stayed out, this misfortune was soon punished as Erith sprung the offside trap and netted their second. The Vets endured a spell of sustained pressure and were spared going further behind several times by the linesmans flag, much to the annoyance of the visitors. The second half saw a vast improvement from the Vets and when Bromers pulled one back mid way through the half the comeback looked on, it was one of those situations when the next goal would be crucial and despite some good play and a lot of effort from the Vets, Erith held firm. The next goal came from the penalty spot but unfortunately, it was a third for Erith as Mick tripped one of their players in the box, this was followed soon after by a fourth to seal the win. A disappointing result but the performance was, at times, encouraging.
Vets 1 - 6 Old Colfeians (A) 11.01.15
Unfortunately the Vets intrepid match reporter was unable to make this game and by all accounts it was a miserable day with the Vets going down 6-1 - the consolation goal courtesy of Bromers.
Vets 6 - 4 Inter Viagra (H) 04.01.15
After the New Year celebrations had died down the Vets were back in action on a fresh morning at the Elmscroft Stadium. Hoping to put aside a run of poor results and get 2015 of to flyer, the game ended up a goal fest, with the Vets eventually coming out on top but the start of the game was all too familiar. The Vets kicked off and begun passing the ball around confidently, Inter Viagra were pressing hard and giving the home team little time on the ball, this soon paid off as the visitors broke through and put themselves one up, the scorer looking very similar to one of the Old Roan players from the disastrous match a fortnight ago. The Vets immediately upped their game and pulled one back as Bromers latched onto a through ball and fired home. The Vets were in control and looked the most likely to score next but it was Inter Viagra who regained the lead as they broke down our left and after a couple of ricochets their striker calmly back heeled the ball past the stranded Paul. It wasn't long before the scores were level again, neat passing through midfield released Deano who blasted the ball into the net. 2-2 at half time and whilst slightly disappointed not to go into the half time break in the lead there was relief that it was no worse than that. We started the second half well and took the lead early on as Bromers stretched the visitors defence and bravely won a crunching 50/50 with their 'keeper the loose ball clinically tucked away by Deano as everyone else winced at the preceding collision. Although in control of the game a dodgy back pass followed by Paul "doing a Mignolet" allowed Inter Viagra to draw level again. This was short lived as our front two continued to terrorise their defence and Deano scored his third and Bromers his second to make it 5-3 and hopefully secure the victory. Not Quite! Inter Viagra were having none of it and pulled one back as Gary, rather unfortunately, tripped one of their players in the box to concede a penalty which was duly dispatched to set up a nervy finish. The best moment of the match came when Mick found himself totally alone in the opposition half with only the 'keeper to beat, unfortunately the 'keeper was still another 40 yards away, he managed 20 of them before his legs gave up and after a couple of pirouettes played the ball to Deano who ran through for his fourth to put the icing on the cake of a fairly comfortable 6-4 victory.
Vets 2 - 10 Old Roan Vets (A) 21.12.14
Difficult to describe what exactly happened in this game. From the kick-off we were in control but failed to get the ball forward and found ourselves 1-0 down within the first two minutes, eight minutes later we were 4-0 down but not playing that badly, just being punished for giving the ball away in dangerous areas. Bromers pulled one back when he got in behind the Old Road defence and rolled the ball under the advancing keeper. Maybe the tide was turning but the home side rallied and created several more chances, Martin Ball making several excellent saves kept our hopes alive but two more goals followed and we went into the half time break the wrong side of 6-1. We started the second half a different side, a rousing half-time team-talk from Stevo inspired us to up the work rate and we immediately cut the deficit after another cool finish from Bromers. A dramatic turn-around was possibly on the cards but several more counter-attacks from Old Roan put the game to bed with a seventh, eighth, ninth and most disappointingly a tenth goal. It's hard to take any positives from a game like this but a fifteen minute run-out for player manager Johnny Gladwin was one.
Vets 2 - 5 HMP Swaleside (A) 07.12.14
After last weeks disappointment the Vets hoped to rediscover their early season form at HMP Swaleside. The first half started well with the Vets in the ascendency and early pressure soon paid off as Deano headed in from a corner. Swaleside nearly equalised when they got in behind the Vets back four but their attempted chip hit the bar and was eventually cleared. The game was fairly even at this point but the Vets took a 2-0 lead when a needless free kick was given away by ironically one of the prison warders which led to prisoner morgan heading in at the far post to take a deserved 2-0 lead in to half time. The second half was a different story, Swaleside swept forward and with our back four left exposed scored with a low shot into the corner of the net, an equaliser soon followed as Swaleside broke in numbers and their striker controlled the ball exquisitely in mid air and lobbed prisoner Thommo, our stand-in 'keeper. Swaleside took the lead with a hint of controversy as a shot was saved brilliantly by Thommo but as the ball looped up in the air, he and the ball appeared to be bundled over the line by the Swaleside right back - but who was going to argue with him! Two more goals for the home side soon followed as the Vets defence was out numbered yet again. A second defeat in a row but thanks to Thommo, Morgan and the other two inmates that helped us out.
Vets 0 - 6 STC Sports Vets (H) 30.11.14
The Vets returned to action after a month without football - and it showed. A few of the STC players got a bit lost and arrived late but it was the home side that failed to turn up, a pale imitation of the team that was on a five game winning run. Everything that had been so good in the previous games had inexplicably evaporated. From the kick-off we were under pressure and a perfectly weighted cushioned header from Scud put the STC skipper in on goal and he slotted the ball home between Paul's legs. The response came courtesy of a run down the left as Deano skipped past several challenges and squared the ball to Starry, who could only toe poke the ball the wrong side of the post. At this point the game was fairly even but failure to clear the ball led to a second for STC and just before half time we were 3-0 down as Sandsy suffered momentary paralysis and was robbed of the ball by the STC winger who broke away and squared the ball to their striker who tapped in from 2 yards. 3-0 to the visitors at half time was slightly flattering but STC had been clinical in punishing our mistakes. The second half saw a slight improvement as we pushed forward looking to get something from the game but clear cut chances never really materialised, the game was soon out of reach when another of their quick wingers skipped inside and curled a left footed shot into the top corner of our net, Paul wearing this weeks Persil white kit, could only just about get finger tips to it but it wasn't enough to prevent us being four down. We continued to push forward, Deano working his socks off as he usually does but nothing fell kindly for us and two late breakaway goals saw the visitors extend their lead - the final score 6-0. This was a very bad day at the office, maybe not 6-0 bad but not far off. Hopefully we can get back to winning ways as the Vets visit HMP Swaleside next Saturday.
Vets 3 - 1 Hythe Vets (A) 26.10.14
After the celebrations had died down following the trouncing of arch rivals Ditton last week, the Vets, were at one stage struggling to field a full eleven players but thanks to the return of Gary Nut, the (hopefully not just a one off) guest appearance from Si Phillips and the inclusion of Smithy, who, having played a full ninety minutes for the reserves the previous weekend, could only make the bench. The Vets travelled to the south coast to face, for the first time, Hythe Vets. Although it has to be said that some of the opposition were ageing extremely well! To be fair to Hythe though, they only played a handful of the youngsters at any one time. Once again we started well, all across the pitch we were comfortable on the ball, knocking it about nicely and were causing the Hythe defence problems, without creating any clear cut chances. Midway through the first half we worked the ball well in midfield and released Billsy in behind the Hythe defence who was savagely assaulted to the ground, the eccentric referee from the remote outback of Australia pointed to the spot, only to have his decision overturned by the assistant ref (linesman to you & me) in controversial circumstances. The first half finished nil - nil. We began the second half as we started the first and threatened the Hythe goal on several occasions, the deadlock was broken when Billsy broke to the byline and was once again felled in the box, this time there was no doubt and the referee rightly pointed to the spot. After some confusion over the location of the penalty spot, Dave Clarke emphatically dispatched the ball into the net. Shortly after we made it two, some quick inter play between Clarkey and Deano saw Deano break free and lob the ball over the keeper, with the help of a slight deflection. Straight from the kick off we capitalised on a slip from a Hythe defender and made it three as Deano was put through by Billsy and slotted the ball home. Hythe continued to attack and scored a late consolation five minutes from time. A fifth win out of five and West Farleigh Vets are entering unchartered territory.
Vets 4 - 2 Ditton Vets (A) 19.10.14
After the international break the Vets travelled to local rivals Ditton, always a tough encounter and this was going to be no exception. The Vets started the game well, the passing was crisp and accurate and we instantly had a strong Ditton team on the back foot, helped by having "young vet" Sam Bantock deputising for Bromers and very much reminding us of a young Martin Bromley! We took the lead on 15 minutes as Starry side-stepped the entire Ditton defence and blasted the ball into the net. Deano made it two ten minutes later when he acrobatically latched onto the end of a Sam Bantock cross after excellent play down the right wing. The best was yet to come with a goal of the season contender. Ditton failed to clear and the ball sat nicely for Starry, wide left. The world stopped momentarily, the ball was struck, the contact perfect, the parabolic trajectory arcing into the sky and dipping just under the bar then bouncing up into the roof of the net - three nil to us, history in the making but could we hold on? In the second half Ditton changed their formation and threw everything at us, we held firm and extended our lead when we broke down the right, quick passing between Sandsy and Malcy released Billsy down the wing who delivered a low cross into the box which Sam guided into the net with a glancing header. We had put a lot of effort into the game so far and were unfortunate not to hold out for another clean sheet as Ditton scored two late consolation goals. The final score four - two. Four wins out of Four and we are playing well.
Vets 1 - 0 Inter Vyagra (A) 05.10.14
With a new penalty taker appointed the Vets took on Inter Vyagra at the Woolwich Barracks sports ground. With midfield linchpin Stevo missing, having spectacularly crashed his motorbike whilst racing at Middlesbrough the day before, we welcomed back Malcy to provide the creativity in our midfield. We began the game not quite at our best, whilst the intent was there the passing was not up to our usual standard, which gave Vyagra a couple of early chances, which luckily Paul, wearing this weeks luminous yellow number, was equal to. As the half wore on our passing became more fluent and we created several half chances without really testing their 'keeper. The second half continued as the first half had finished and it took another long range chip from Clarkey to break the deadlock as we held out for another impressive one - nil away win.
Vets 3 - 1 Farnborough Old Boys (H) 28.09.14
After a week off the Vets welcomed Farnborough Old boys to the Elmscroft Stadium. Opting for a 3-5-2 or something like that, formation, we had the best of the opening exchanges and were unfortunate to go a goal down when we lost the ball in the middle of the field and their striker pulled out to the left taking full advantage of Robbo pulling up with a calf injury to curl the ball into the top corner, somewhat against the run of play but nonetheless a great finish, giving Paul, wearing this weeks orange number, no chance. We responded well, attacking down the left and were awarded a penalty when Bromers had his shirt pulled in the box right in front of the referee. What happened next was a case of deja vu (for those who went on the Southampton tour) as Starry stepped up to take the pen. The keeper had no chance as he was sent the wrong way, unfortunately the ball soared high and wide over the bar and into the distance just missing Eazyjet flight EZ010 returning from Malaga. The managers frustration was there for all to see "why did you let him take it??!" he screamed from the side line. The anguish was short lived as Bromers struck a low shot into the bottom corner to bring us level just before half time. The second half was all us, Deano picked the ball up on the half way line and ran with it all the way to the edge of the box firing the ball into the top corner to make it two - one, followed up with an exquisite chip from Dave Clarke, who was outstanding all game, to make it a comfortable three - one win
Vets 1 - 0 Erith Vets (A) 14.09.14
Another Vets season begins and after last seasons disappointment in this fixture we were determined to get off a good start. We were in control of the game and took a deserved lead mid way through the first half as Bromers rounded the keeper and slotted home. We could have and probably should have scored more putting the game out of sight but the Erith defence held firm and the 'keeper made a couple of good saves. A one-nil lead is never secure but our defence was equal to anything Erith had in attack, however, there was a late scare when the ball fell to the Erith skipper outside the box and he attempted an audacious lob but Paul Commons, sporting this week's lime green number, safely plucked the ball out of the air just under the bar, enabling us to see out the last few seconds for a hard fought one nil away win.
Vets 1 - 4 Reserves (H) 31.08.14
The annual Nathan Wise memorial match once again saw the Vets take on the Reserves. In late summer sunshine the game started slowly with both teams passing the ball about on the near perfect surface. The reserves took the lead midway through the half and quickly followed up with another. Mick Smithson pulled one back just before half time firing in a low shot from the edge of the box. The Vets started the second half brightly and should have equalised through Martin Bromley early in the second half but the ball was cleared off the line and broke kindly to the Reserves who capitalised with a classic counter attack, scoring a third. With the Vets tiring the reserves soon made it four and could have added a fifth when the ball looked to be over the line following a corner but it didn't touch the back of the net and that doesn't count in our book and it would have been harsh anyway. A good game with many positives for both teams.
2013-2014
Vets 1- 3 Vinters (A) 12.04.14
For the first 20
minutes we dominated and if we had taken our opportunities within
this spell they would not have come back. However, they
caught us twice at the back and that left us chasing for the rest of the
game. They made it 3 half way
through the second half. Our only crumb of comfort came in the last minutes when
Bromers finally scored.
A few of the Vinters players hadn't grasped the ethics of Vets football, pulling shirts ,whining about every decision that didn't go their way and when it comes to kicking the ball away, that's another level. They must be suffering from watching too much premier football on the telly syndrome !

Vets 4 - 3 Riverside Wanderers (A) 06.04.14
The gaffer started his
team talk in Allington Way with ‘’I’ve forgot the kit, that’s whose playing, and
its 4-4-2 Starry!’ before rushing home to make sure Mark definitely moved out!
Anyway, we set off in hast whilst Satnav waited for his misses to bring the
emergency kit…..would it fit….what’s the colour……would it clash with Deano’s
hair……..would Satnav be able to find the ground?!?! Malcy having lost the toss,
started having played a full 90 minutes the day before. We kicked downhill with
the plan to get a strong lead and went exactly to plan with Deano getting a goal
within the first 10 minutes. After an inspired substitution and making use of
our subs bench, Sandsy finished a fine move and slotted home for a 2-0 lead. We
were playing well and after a superb dummy header from Smithy, Clarkey…..yes
Clarkey, scored whilst slipping backwards to make it 3-0. Against the run of
play, Paul the Cat gave away a heavily disputed penalty to make it 3-1. Deano
then responded with a prid goal to make it 4-1 at half time. We stared the
2nd half with too much confidence and soon found ourselves 4-3 up and
hanging on in there. Brommers proved he was actually human by hitting the post
twice and now goes by the name of Postman Pat. It was a great game and we ran
out worthy winners, always knowing we could of stepped it up if we needed to.
Obviously everyone is playing for a place in Southampton! - A. Starr
Vets 2 - 2 Old Colfeians (H) 23.03.14
Old Colfeians only had 8
players, but fortunately for them we had player overload and thanks to Robbo,
Neill, Masha (1st half) & Malcy (2nd half) for sportingly playing for
them. I think the confusion of who
was playing for who and the delayed kick off unsettled us a little, as we
made a slow start to the game and found ourselves trailing after conceding a
sloppy goal. This gave us a wake up
call. Deano came on and hassled their defence and scored from distance. The second half was
virtually one way traffic, as we camped them in their half. However
they were are always dangerous on the counter. Colfeians took the
lead again after a mix up with Sandsy and Starry, who lost the ball after he
tried to do a 'Ricky Villa' in our penalty box! We pushed for the equaliser
and finally Masha scored from close range after latching onto Deano's effort
that hit the post. We really should have won this game
but for Will who was in goal for Colfeians and made some excellent
saves.
Vets 2 - 1 Riverside Wanderers (H) 16.03.14
From a squad of 16 to the
bare 11 wasn't an ideal start .
We were unfortunate to go behind when Riverside scored with a complete fluke of a goal, lobbing stand-in keeper Robbo. But we showed good character to come back and within minutes Bromers scored a well worked goal following a string of passes between Malc, Clarkey & Sandsey
Second half I took over in goal, thankfully there wasn't too much to do as through out the game we had long spells of pressure, but just couldn't find the target. Finally a deflected shot from Deano sealed a deserved win.
A really good performance from everyone and as ever thanks to Mickey for reffing and Mick's friends form Leeds for their support & running the line.

Vets 1 - 1 Sheppey (A) 08.03.14
We came out brightly and considering
the bobbly surface conditions the whole team were stringing passes together. But we fell
behind mid-way through the half to a goal which was suspiciously offside and Gary appearing to be impeded. This didn't put us off our game and got
what we deserved when Neil Coppin, who ran his socks off all morning
grabbed the equalizer.
The game was destined to be a draw. Clarkey had few long range shots , but other than that we never really threaten. Always a competitive but fairly contested game against Sheppey.

Vets 2 - 2 Farnborough Old Boys (A) 23.02.14
There
were Strong gusts, we played with the wind in the first half and made a bright
start but fell behind when they were awarded a penalty.
However we battled back
with 2 excellent solo goals both superbly finished. Firstly Deano lobbing the
keeper from 20 yards, then Bromers chased down a defender to give us a well
deserved 2 -1 lead at half time.
The wind
seemed to increase after the break , playing a huge part in the game, but
we dug deep and defended well, limiting their chances. They drew
level when Paul parried a shot which fell to a 'wrong footed' Sandsey who
unfortunately scored an own goal. A draw was probably a fair reflection of
the game.
Vets 1 - 6 Ditton (A) 26.01.14
It
was freezing cold, muddy and hammered down for the full 90 minutes and we lost
6 - 1. I did a good impression of
Steve McClaren, taking refuge under an umbrella. Stevo & Liam who started as subs also huddled
in, with neither of them wanting to go on come their time. The only
highlight was when Bromers scored with a header, we haven't seen many of those
over the years.
In all a total miserable bloody morning !

Vets 1 - 1 Old Tamps (A) 22.12.13
The venue and
opponents were switched to a 3G pitch and we played Old Tamps. As the
game progressed, they began to look the more likely to take the lead , but
we defended well as a team and limited them to only a few
chances.
Midway through the second half we were awarded a penalty, after Bromers was brought down. Up stepped Starry, those who remembered his last effort a few years ago in Folkestone looked away, but to everyone's surprise he blasted home. Unfortunately we didn't hold onto the lead and they equalised, and to be honest was no more than they deserved.

Vets 2 - 4 HMP Stamford Hill (A) 14.12.13
I think travelling
to Sheppey for the early kick off didn't really suit us. We were half-a-sleep
for the majority of the game, and all in all we gave a pretty tepid
performance. The only highlight being Starry's corner that some how fooled
everyone and trickled over the line.
However, it was a good fixture and we'll definitely arrange another next season. Stamford Hill were just as sporting and friendly as Swaleside

Vets 2 -1 STC Sports (H) 01.12.13
We
responded instantly after falling behind when Liam levelled, steering in from
close-range. The winner came
courtesy of precise explosive strike from Ian Payne, he'll be dining
out for years on that ! It was nice to be able to
field our strongest side and everyone gave a great performance.
Special thanks to Paul
for reffing and keeping peace in a pulsating match that threatened to boil over a number of times.
Vets 1 - 6 Sheppey (H) 16.11.13
It wasn't 6-1 .... well it was. We did score the last and best goal of the game, which was a better reflection - but that was the only crumb of comfort.
Vets 2- 0 Holtwood (H) 03.11.13
Convincing win with goals from Bromers and a well taken header by Liam after Stevo delivered a pin point corner
Vets 1 - 4 Ditton (A) 20.10.13
We played really well until a crazy 15
minute spell mid way through the second half when we conceded 3 goals, that
killed the game off.
However we battled on and
typically it was Deano who scored a well deserved consolation goal.
Vets 1 - 4 Farnbrough Old Boys (H) 29.09.13
With 8 regulars out I had to beg steal and borrow players to keep this fixture on. Thanks to all who all helped out.
As for the game it was Christmas come early for Farnborough as we had the majority of the game, however they had a total of 5 shots and scored 4, enough said!
Our only goal came courtesy of Bromers following a slide-rule pass from France (good to see him enjoying his football again)

Vets 1 - 5 Chartham (H) 22.09.13
In the first half we were caught out by a long ball over the top and found ourselves 4 down.
The second half was much better. We reverted to 4-4-2 and regained our balance and were on top for the majority of the half. It was really disappointing when they scored a fifth against the run of play. Finally our hard work paid off when Sandsey slotted home following an unselfish pass from Deano, who unfortunately was involved in a nasty head-on collision in the last minutes, the gash need 9 stitches.

Vets 1 -2 Erith Vets (A) 15.09.13
This game that should of been won by half time as we dominated from the kick off and scored mid way through the half when Malcy placed the ball home following excellent link-up play between Deano and Bromers. Unfortunately we failed to capitalise on further chances.
In the second half we look like different side, we were a little jaded conceding two sloppy goals to throw the game away.
Must mention Starry's new boots, to wear boots like that you've got to be bloody good or just up for a laugh......I'll let the reader decide !

Vets 2 - 0 Farleigh Res (H) 08.09.13
The Nathan Wise memorial is now a fixture v The Reserves, It turned out as quite a competitive match.
Bromers opened the scoring before half-time, after beating the offside trap then coolly rounding the keeper.
He doubled his tally in the second when he strolled through the defence to drive home to secured a worthy win.
Everybody played well today, with both the defence and midfield being very disciplined.
All monies raised go towards Riding for the Disabled Association

Vets 1 -2 HMP Swaleside (A) 31.08.13
When Malcy told Beccy he needed his passport as he was off to a huge premises in acres of land on a remote Island , what he really meant he took his
passport for security checks as we had our first game of the season against HMP Swaleside on The Isle of Sheppey !
The game was played on a 3G Astro-turf pitch. The first half we struggled to get into the game. Swaleside meant business dominating the game and you could tell they weren't going to take any more prisoners ,however they squandered chance after chance and it was incredible that we were still in the game going into the interval only 2 down.
The second half we changed our formation and were able to settle down a little bit and created and few chances with Deano at the centre of most, who powered forward from Swalesides classy central defenders to fire a goal bound strike that Davor latched onto from close range just to make sure.
Excellent saves from both Paul & Martin kept us in the game. We pressed for an equalizer but unfortunately ran out of time and they won 2-1
Swaleside are a sporting and friendly side , everyone really enjoyed the game and it was played in exactly the right spirit.

Vets 2 -2 Sheppey (H) 20.04.13
I thought this was probably a fair result. They started the brightest and could have scored if it hadn't been for an excellent save by Martin. We came back into it and took the lead with well worked goal from Bromers, but unfortunately we couldn't hang on and they levelled on the stroke of half time. We continued to push forward after the interval but they caught us on the break to make 2 -1 but a well taken penalty by Davor shared the spoils.
Vets 2 - 1 Riverside Wanderers (A) 07.04.13
The quote of the season will probably be from me. ''Not from there Deano," just before he volleyed in a 30 yard equaliser. To make things worse, the Chuckle brothers, aka Starry & Silky, were standing next to me on the line, so I doubt if they'll ever let me forget it. .....What do I know?
We were 1 - 0 down at half time but this could have been a lot worse if it hadn't been for Richard Butler, who made three fantastic saves to keep us in the game. We upped it in the second half and an unlikely diving header from Liam Horgan, gave us a deserved win. Riverside are a good sporting competitive team and provided a good spread of food in the pub aftterwards.

Vets 0-4 Ditton (H) 31.03.13
With most of the team having set the clocks to British Summer Time, we soon realised that maybe Davor hadn't! Not that we would of missed his talent but he had the kit! Ditton were clearly up for a few goals having comfortably put nine past us earlier in the season, but as the snow flurry eased, it was clear that the Farleigh Team resembling the Dirty Dozen were up for a fight! We battled bravely in the first half; one of our best of the season. However, a Ditton goal just before the break and some Malcy magic on the inventive use subs orchestrated proceedings to a 4-0 defeat.
Deano's trousers and Dave's quote were highlights of the day.
"Is John back next week Malcy?"
"yes Dave"
"Good, ill be here then" lifted the dressing room spirits! - A. Starr

WF Vets 5-1 Old Coulfonians (H) 24.03.13
"Johnny Gladwin played all the first half and they didn't score" IRP. A
good all round performance on a non-icy mud rink. Bromers shows Michael Owen you do not have to retire at 33

WF Vets 3 -1 Holtwood (H) 10.03.13
An excellent win after going behind to an early own goal and Deano missing a penalty, who made amends with an energetic run to make it level at the break. A blistering performance in the second half as we totally dominated with Bromers grabbing a brace.
