Reports 2006
Southborough/Wateringbury
6th May The 1st team match was abandoned as a draw shortly after tea. Prevously we has won the toss and batted reaching 142 all out. Matt Smith top scoring with 29 The 2nds after being put in, amassed 220 for 7 (Ian Prideaux 80) In reply the home side were dismissed for 100 WF won by 120 runs Leeds and Broomfield away 13th May Batting first we amassed 217 for 3. In what was a very well contrived innings thanks mainly from Paul Taylor 78 n.o. and Richard Truelove 80. This challenging target was made even more so when the home side reached 123 for 7; however from there John Fletcher being well assisted at the other end knocked off the rest with 2 over to spare. Paul Baines taking 4 wkts. Horton Kirby/Rumwood 20th May Rumwood called off the 2nd XI early, but with the hope of improving weather later on in the day Horton Kirby were asked to travel down. Both teams waited to see if at '35 over' game could be scheduled; sadly it was not possible and the game was eventually called off at 3 o'clock without a ball being bowled. East Sutton (20/20) 23rd May After losing the toss we had the home side wobbling at 24 for 4 in the 5th over before Sean Charlton (ex Linton Pk) and Chris Back (ex The Mote) put on nearly 100 before finishing at 133 for 7. In reply we never realy got in the hunt with a succesion of early wickets, with only Alan Smith getting any worthwhile bat on the ball, before we were eventually bowled out for 54. Bearsted/Eynesford 27th May After losing the toss we had the home side wobbling at 24 for 4 in the 5th over before Sean Charlton (ex Linton Pk) and Chris Back (ex The Mote) put on nearly 100 before finishing at 133 for 7. In reply we never realy got in the hunt with a succesion of early wickets, with only Alan Smith getting any worthwhile bat on the ball, before we were eventually bowled out for 54. Milsted/Horton Kirby 30th May Milstead - After winning the toss and electing to bat, a good start was followed by a dramatic collapse; so from 40-1 we were skittled all out for 74. In reply we made the work for their small target, and when early wickets fell hopes were raised briefly only for them to bat out some 25 overs in reaching our score for the loss of 4 wkts. Horton Kirby - A similar performance was played out for the seconds. In this case we could only manage 108 with the bat; a target that they made short shrift of, reaching it for the loss of only 1 wicket (which was the first in the league for the young prodigy, Mr George Baines) Match reports for June 2006 Hollingbourne 20/20 5th May In a thrilling, low scoring game, West Farleigh finally fell short losing by the 1 wicket. Winning the toss on a glorious evening, runs were hard to come by and the total of 81 runs, eventaully being all out on the last ball, never seemed enough against a talented Hollingbourne XI. However, in reply wickets soon began to fall, and even though they were always up and around the required run rate, when they got to 61 for 9; hopes were high. Sadly at this pivotal time the skipper put down a sharp chance, diving late for skyed drive. The match was then taken away from us with a couple of hefty blows. Darn! Marden away 10th May On a day when we should all have been watching England play Paraguay between the innings, at the late requirement of Marden we kindly offered to start at 2pm. Fortunately, winning the toss we batted. The skipper was promptly out first ball, but the team recovered with the help of Greg Snape (38) and Colin Fry (125) to a total of 215 for 7. In reply, a sharp run out, several good catches and a redeeming frugal 12 overs from the skipper put us in a promising position, but their stubburn opener, Tony Sunnucks steered them skillfully to their target with only 6 balls to spare Cobham/Marden 17th June Cobham won the toss and put us in. On a track where the ball was never 'coming on' to the bat, runs were hard to come by. Innings of 25 (Greg Snape) and a breezy 22 (Richard Truelove) steered us to an unimpressive 114 all out. What looked like a difficult total to defend, Cobham's openers playing 'millionaire's' cricket soon found them selves at 36 for 6, but from there we were unable to make any more inroads as their skipper manufactured the remaining runs required. Another one that got away! Marden The 2's fared much better as they chased a total of 145 and reached their target with 3 balls to spare. Detling away 20/20 12th June Our first win of the season. A very good all round performance, where everyone had a part to play. Bearsted away 20/20 27th June losing the toss and being asked to bowl, we restricted the visitors to 156 for 5. The score looking heading for a much lesser total, before some 'long handle' hitting by their captain Andy Dampier and Jonh Lee. In reply, we were in a similar position to them but were unable to accelerate towards the end ending up at 99 for 4. Opener Greg Snape remaining not out on 28. West Farleigh travelled to Gloucestershire from Kent for this Friendly fixture and won by 4wickets due to a great knock by R.Truelove. Oakridge won the toss and chose to bat in the extreme heat. Their batsmen though found the bowling too hot to handle and soon Oakridge were 37-4. Iain Taylor continued his fine recent form and the innings started to take shape once he was at the crease. Ian Mills was caught with the score on 58 and the homesters were struggling. Steve Robbins came in at 7 and with Taylor put on a 53 run partnership. The dreaded nelson '111' saw S.Robbins caught behind and Lionel Robbins came to the crease and produced a needed 14 runs in the final overs. Taylor batted very well and his downfall was a full toss which he hit straight to point. after last weeks 95 he made a vital 67. Oakridge closed on 150-7 at tea. For West Farleigh P.Taylor bowled well and had figures of 3-26. The visitors lost two early wickets, G.Kirkpatrick bowled by the continually improving Tom Newman and Snape, suicidialy run out. R.Truelove and M.Smith then dominated the Oakridge attack and the score passed 100 before the next wicket fell. M.Smith fell for 44 and although he was dropped a few times played some powerful attacking shots. Rich Minchin took a couple of wickets to set up an interesting finale but captain Mark Meyrick and R.Truelove, who finished with an excellent 71 not out, held their nerve and guided Farleigh to victory. Minchin returned figures of 2-33 and Tom Newman 1-26 from 7 overs. Newman did suffer an injury during the game and Oakridge will be hoping he will be fit to play next weekend. Craig Mills kept wicket for the first time for Oakridge and only conceded 5 byes. Everybody enjoyed the game and hopefully the fixture will continue for many years to come. 1sts willesborough With a weakened side we lost the toss and fielded. Have started at a break neck speed willesborough finally managed 278 for 6 In reply we were never going to come close, but got to 149 all out at the close. 2nds hollingbourne Batting first we amassesd178 and in reply still needing 20 from their last wicket they scored 4 to win off the last ball when the scores were level. 1st's Leeds and Broomfield we had, on paper, a weakened side and when leeds won the toss and decided to bat, a long day in the field beckoned, however the home side bowled and fielded well with bryan stryden starring with theball taking 6 for 37 abley helped by the safe hand of marley 'bob' nemane taking 4 well taken catches. this 'restricted' them to 210 all out. in reply we were always behaind the required rate but eventually finished on a creditable 1652 for 9. gary french top scoring on 45 to lead this year's averages. 2nd's Staplehurst the 2nd's faired much better skittling staplehurst out for 87 and chasing down the target with 4 wickets to spare 1st's willesborough abandoned after 30 overs when we were 104 for 5: Rain 2nd's Shipbourne Not a ball bowled, much to the concern (much p***ed off) of shipbourne who thought they had a chance of finishing second. The fact that the square was under water, it seemed, was not a valid reason for not playing. Milsted/sheldwich Both games lost to the rain 2nds Paul Taylor was noticable by his absence and Jamie Webb had to step in at late notice! We lost the toss and were put into the field. Teston always struggled and were eventually restricted to 134 off their 40 overs. In reply, the upper hand never firmly placed itself on either team's shoulders until in the latter stages our supporting cast to (guest player) eventually gave way so that we ended up 25 runs short. |
